Diagnostic Methodology for Production Chains

Do not begin with a copied recipe table or an assumed “best” machine ratio. Pick one material in your current build and write down only the values you can see: machine count, cycles per minute, quantity consumed per cycle, and quantity produced per cycle.

The planner converts those observations into a transparent per-minute ledger. A deficit tells you which material needs more verified supply; a surplus tells you where output may accumulate. Neither result guarantees permanent stability, because transport limits, pauses, power behavior, and patch changes are outside this P0 calculation unless you measure them as explicit rates.

Production Chain Steps

  1. Select one material and define the narrow section of the chain you want to diagnose; do not map an unverified full technology tree.
  2. Inspect each included machine in your current build and record its cycle rate plus the quantities consumed and produced per cycle.
  3. Multiply each per-cycle quantity by the machine's cycles per minute to determine canonical flow rates in items/min, kg/min, or L/min.
  4. Enter your verified machine and endpoint rates into the Material Balance Planner to detect intermediate supply deficits or byproduct accumulation.
  5. Change one measured input or machine count, observe the same time window again, and compare the new ledger with the previous result.

Verifying Factory Stability

Once your production chain is running: Model your complete machine layout in the Material Balance Planner to keep all flow equations visible and verified.

  1. Use a fixed observation window: Compare the same start and end condition rather than relying on one screenshot.
  2. Record interruptions: A stopped machine, blocked transport path, or manual transfer can make observed throughput differ from the entered cycle math.
  3. Repeat after changes: Update only the fields you verified; do not keep stale values from an earlier build or layout.

How do I know if my early factory line is ratio-balanced?

Record the current input, output, and cycle values, normalize them to the same per-minute unit, and compare production with consumption. A mathematical balance is a diagnostic starting point; verify the behavior in your own running build.

Should I build buffer chests between every production step?

Small buffers help absorb temporary delivery spikes, but cannot fix fundamental rate deficits. Use the Material Balance Planner to verify continuous throughput before adding excessive buffer storage.
